About This Collection

The Wahkiakum County Heritage Collection, consisting of over 300 images, is the result of a collaborative community digitization project coordinated by the Cathlamet Blanche Bradley Public Library. It is comprised of: the Cathlamet Blanche Bradley Public Library Collection, the Wahkiakum County Historical Society & Museum Collection, and the Wahkiakum Community Collection (a compilation of images and documents contibuted by DeEtta Funderburg, Evelyn Huerd, Bonnie LaDoe and Ruby Keating Scarborogough). It is our desire to make these items of local history available to the world. We hope to add additional images in the future.

The collection illustrates a portion of the history of Wahkiakum County by offering a glimpse into the lives of settlers, founding families and noteworthy citizens as well as the early days of the forestry, fishing and farming industries.

We are grateful to Washington State Library without whose support, guidance and funding the project would not have been possible.

About This Site

Wahkiakum County Heritage is a project of Washington Rural Heritage, a collection of historically significant materials residing in libraries, heritage institutions, and private collections throughout Washington State. The collection includes photographs, documents, and artifacts which tell the stories of Washington's small and rural communities.

Cathlamet Blanche Bradley Public Library

The Cathlamet Blanche Bradley Public Library is located above the Town Hall on Main Street in Cathlamet, Washington.

Mrs. Lulu Heron, a local teacher and wife of Cathlamet Mayor and butcher store owner J.W. Heron, met with the Town Council in 1931 as a representative of the Cathlamet Woman’s Club. Her request to use the council room as a public library was granted. In 1933 the council voted to accept the Woman’s Club Public Library as the town library.

Decades later Blanche Heron Bradley and her husband Harold took possession of the Heron family home. In 1973 the Bradley’s daughter, Harriet Bradley Tagart, donated the dwelling to the town. It was then named Blanche H. Bradley Memorial Center and housed the town library for the next 14-years. The house was sold in the late 1980’s and the library moved to its current location on the second floor of Town Hall.

Wahkiakum County Museum

The Wahkiakum County Museum is operated by the Wahkiakum County Historical Society and contains a unique variety of historical artifacts and donated private collections. There is an assortment of old photographs depicting the history of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County, which are available for viewing, and copies of the photos may be also be purchased. Outside the museum you will find various pieces of old logging and fishing equipment on display. While the exterior of this museum appears small, the wealth of history it contains is enormous and is well worth the visit!
