Located at the confluence of Snake and Clearwater Rivers, in Asotin
County, Washington, at the head of all-the-year navigation, immediately across the Snake River from Lewiston, Idaho. Steamboats
in connection with the trains of the O. R. it N. Co. call three to six
times a week. A fast-running cable ferry, of ten tons capacity, plies
between the two towns every few minutes. With the early bridging
of Snake River, now determined upon, the two places will form one
large town, commercially speaking. Being in different States, and
different Counties, each possesses all the means for the creation of
prosperous cities, which a healthy but friendly rivalry will only
promote, to the good of both places.
Lewiston, Washington, is the town center of the district of
Vineland, the newly irrigated region which is exciting the wonder
and admiration of the Pacific Northwest, because of its remarkable
growth and development, and splendid prospects.
Its growth is wholly without any "boom" features, being based
wholly upon solid worth, and exceptional opportunity. No bonuses;
no flashy advertising, no questionable methods have been used,
offered or allowed for a moment in pushing the enterprise.
Lewiston J. Washington, at the present rate of growth, in three
years will become the largest and thriftiest town in Southeastern
Washington. *
Schools are now well organized, under the best of teachers, and
the growth is so rapid that much larger accommodations will be
required and provided for the next school year.
Church services are held regularly. Two church buildings ore
in process of erection. A thriving lyceum is proving of much
interest and value to the people. A live horticultural society, is doing
much to promote the chief interests of the valley. The Vineland
Improvement Association is an organization for the general advancement of all the miscellaneous interests of the community; especially
as to streets, roads, road-Bide tree planting, parks, etc.,.
At the date of this writing (January 1897) there are two stores
in operation, and four more in construction; also an hotel, a livery
stable, blacksmith shop, bakery, lumber and building materials, etc.
There are openings in all lines for live, active men of experience
and capital.
On the Fair Grounds, near town, blooded horses are trained
during winter for spring and summer racing—the only track in the
Northwest where this is possible. A fact that speaks highly for the
mildness and freedom from snow of the Lewiston Valley.
