| Description | Large irrigation water wheel located on the north side of the Yakima River upstream from Benton City. The Horse Heaven Hills rise from the opposite bank. This photo was likely taken during late spring, as leaves are on the poplar tree to the left and the river water is running high through the brush on the bank opposite. When they were first begun, the companies that built and ran the irrigation facilities often experienced difficulties keeping all the acreage they served “under water.” Individuals often maintained private irrigation systems, so it is entirely possible this water wheel was privately owned at the time of the photo as the caption indicates. A railroad train is seen traveling along the Northern Pacific tracks on the south side of the river in the second image. |
