From their camps beside these falls, '^the Indians had as well a happy hunting grounds, for this region •^bounded, in wild game of every type. :¦..:.,:A.'. 11^X621, ten. years after Thompson's preliminary exploration^fithe . ^Hudson's Bay Company established a Fort near the Falls, and'Called Jit "Colville", Here began the first mining, milling, agriculture, land stock raising in the Columbia drainage basin of. northern ^-- --.r:jr- Washington, The gorgeous falls, over which, the entire volume'of-.r^,. water in the mighty Columbia drops 20 feet, were, called Kettle .ttV Falls, because of the curious holes or kettles worn in the rocks at their base by the action of the water through countless ages; The Jesuit Fathers, among the noblest bearers of Civilizing in¬ fluences to this region, erected a log church near the falls in "1825, It was an interesting example of construction without V nails. The burial ground beside the church bears many an in-r : - scription in tribute to the adventurous lives of the early set- ' tiers. \ -: ¦•¦.i i .:.¦;•'¦ First settlement near the Colville river was made in the late 80s by homesteaders Louis Bulew and Peter Hackens, It bore the name of Bulew Town. And then came a curious boom episode* The. ^ Rochester Land Company of Rochester, New York invested heavily in real estate here, and changed the name of the settlement to Kettle Fallsf after the falls of the river. Electric power was developed on the Colville River, an irrigation system was con---'/'. structed, trolley lines to Republic and elsewhere were planned; • ¦•¦ and a sumptuous hotel, then the finest west of the Mississippi;': ' according to eye-witnesses.
