Indians would try to charge the settlers very high prices for the timber. Chief Seltice soon found it necessary to call meetings of the Indians and Whites, over which he presided. He held the meetings at our place and would have my father act as interpreter. This saved many misunderstandings among the Indians and Whites. There would be 25 to 30 Indians and Whites sitting on the ground in a circle.
My father remembered but one killing, a young renegade Indian by the name of Paul Harry killed Mrs. Peevy and her small baby by cutting their throats. This Indian was run down and killed by Chief Seltice and his men. This put a stop to anymore trouble between the Whites and Indians.
In August 1883, I, Albin W. Tyler was born and on September 6, 1888, my sister Edith was born.
By this time my parents had accumulated quite a herd of cattle and ran a dairy. They sold milk in Tekoa every day from a milk wagon. The extra milk would set in 5 gallon cans in cold water to raise the cream, which they churned into butter and sold any place they could. They even shipped butter into the Coeur d»Alene mining country. Most of the time they f received no more than 25<£ for a two pound roll.
The first school I can remember was held just inside Warwick*s gate and soon after there was built a one room school near by which was later moved up beside the new grade school on the hill in the southwest part of town.
The first store I remember was a little building down on the hillside where we came to the steep grade after crossing the bridge over Hangman Creek or Latah Creek as it was later called. Soon after there vjere other stores. One by F. Y. V/arner on the corner below the old opera house. The V/arner family resided in the rear. After this the town grew quite rapidly both east and south from Hoare's Hardware Store dovm two blocks south to the old Calvert Hotel (present site of the Chevron Station) on both sides of the street. Most of this part of town was destroyed by fire in 1895 but was rebuilt in a short time.
The first wagon bridge I remember, crossed Hangman Creek about a block North of the D. W. Truax home on the west side of town. The road ran up the steep grade toward V/arner's Store. Before the railroad came through in 1889" we hauled all our grain to Cheney by team which would require two days to make the trip. We would receive an 1*yerage of 35£ a bushel for it. We hauled lumber from the
