Description |
A man stands on a small raft which is being loaded with rocks. Two other men are standing on a dock, while three men are on the cobble-covered river bank loading material. A team of horses, one light and one dark, stand nearby. The three wheelbarrows in the photo are made with low sides to facilitate loading and unloading of heavy materials. This operation would have taken place in late summer or very early fall when the river was at its lowest. The Kiona canal was located about five miles upstream of Kiona on the north side (Benton City side) of the Yakima River. At the time the Kiona Canal was built the land on both sides of the Yakima River was referred to as the Kiona area. The city of Benton City did not yet exist, the plat filed by North Coast Railroad in February 1910. The Kiona Canal is now known as the Kiona Irrigation District (KiID), whose water rights date back to 1889. The canal was first developed by the Yakima Irrigating and Improvement Company. At the time of the photo, the irrigation district was held by the Northwestern Improvement Company, a subsidiary of the Northern Pacific Railroad. During the Yakima River flood of 1996, some of the KiID system’s infrastructure suffered damage; consequently the system was reworked and the water is currently delivered via a pressurized pump and pipe distribution system. Written on envelope: “Hauling materials for Kiona Canal dam 1904, no. 35”. |
